Getting the Grind Just Right

One of the most frequently asked questions is, “Do I need to buy a special herb grinder or can I just use a food processor or coffee grinder?” The answer?  Yes, you really, really need to purchase an herb grinder if you want to get the most out of your herbs and the most out of your vaporizer.  You can’t even imagine the difference it will make!

Much like Bubba’s litany of ways to cook shrimp in Forrest Gump, there are innumerable varieties of herb grinders.  They come in metal, glass, plastic, wood, and acrylic; see through and colors; all are handheld; and all have to be hand turned. Herb grinders are often included free when you buy a new vaporizer, which benefits both you and the maker of the vaporizer because you will never get the maximum benefit from your vaporizer without using an herb grinder.

So, now for Herb Grinding 101 — here are the basics about what you need to know about grinding and selecting a grinder when you buy one.

If there is a law of herb grinding it is this:  the active ingredients in your herbs are released when they are exposed to heat, and the more surface area exposed to heat, the better the end result.  Therefore, if you grind your herbs down to a fine powder — which produces a lot of surface area – your end product is going to be a far more superior vapor than any you would ever achieve with herbs chopped by any other method.  There is just no way to reach this fine end result other than with a good grinder.  Good herb grinders are inexpensive and well worth the investment.

How Does An Herb Grinder Work?

Herb Grinders can be divided into two categories:  pollinators and bud grinders (essentially for cannabis use).  No matter what the purpose the concept is basically the same.

grinders come in two or three pieces
smaller version have two pieces (teeth in the top and bottom)

To Use:
– place herb in grinder
– securely place top on bottom
– twist top and bottom back and forth until degree of grinding is achieved – the longer you twist, the finer the grind
– open, and tap out ground herb, ready for use

the larger version has three pieces: top with teeth; center piece with teeth on one side and strainer holes to allow ground herb to fall through to bottom level; bottom which catches ground herb and can also be used as stash cup

To Use:
– screw center piece to bottom
– place product on teeth of center piece
– securely place top on bottom
– twist top and bottom back and forth until degree of grinding is achieved – the longer you twist, the finer the grind
– remove top from center piece (material left here is larger)
– unscrew center piece from bottom cup (material in cup is finely ground herb, ready for use)

What is Your Herb Grinder Made of?

Herb grinders can be made of acrylic, wood, plastic, or aluminum.  Here are the pros and cons of each.

- Acrylic Herb Grinders are great.  They are inexpensive, and often have magnetic tops to keep them shut.  It is a good starter grinder because it is see-through and the user can see just how fine the grind is while using it.

- Plastic Herb Grinders are very cheap, and very light weight.  They are easy to get, and no great loss if you lose yours.  Just order another.

-Wood Herb Grinders might seem like a great idea, and they do often look nice, but there is a major drawback – they expand, shrink, and warp – and then they don’t work.  You might want to think twice before you make this choice.

- Aluminum or Stainless Steele Herb Grinders are the best you can buy, and will stand up to years of punishment.  The lids are often magnetized to ensure they stay shut.  They look sleek and modern.  And, most important, they are virtually unbreakable.
